Pattern Recognition
The ability to identify recurring behaviors, habits, and tendencies in your own trading by analyzing journal data over time.
What is Pattern Recognition in Trading Performance?
Pattern recognition here doesn't mean chart patterns — it means recognizing recurring behaviors in YOUR trading. Do you always overtrade on Fridays? Do your losses cluster after 2 PM? Do you perform worse after a big win? These are behavioral patterns that silently erode performance, and they're invisible without data.
Types of Behavioral Patterns
- Temporal patterns: Performance differences by day of week, time of day, or session
- Sequential patterns: How you trade after a win streak vs a loss streak
- Emotional patterns: Which emotional states correlate with your best and worst performance
- Setup patterns: Which setups have positive expectancy and which are losing you money
- Risk patterns: When you deviate from your position sizing rules
From Pattern to Action
Identifying a pattern is only useful if you create a rule to address it. "I overtrade on Fridays" becomes "Maximum 2 trades on Friday." "I revenge trade after 2 losses" becomes "Mandatory 30-minute break after 2 consecutive losses." Patterns without rules remain just interesting observations.
